Because harmful algae thrives in hot weather and conditions can shift rapidly, officials advise that blooms may exist at any body of water under favorable conditions. Visitors should avoid contact with water exhibiting bad odors, discoloration, foam, scum, algal mats, or nearby wildlife carcasses. Authorities emphasize that the public should avoid all water and shoreline contact if a bloom is suspected, particularly for children and pets.
