Federal operation targets violent crimes on Arizona tribal lands, 5 charged

The FBI and the Department of Justice announced Tuesday that a federal initiative targeting violent crime on tribal lands resulted in charges against five individuals in Arizona. Operation Not Forgotten, a nationwide enforcement effort, addressed multiple felony cases on the Navajo Nation and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Federal investigators filed charges in four separate cases on the Navajo Nation, including two counts of violent assault, one count of arson, and one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child younger than 12. A fifth person was charged in connection with an assault on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. The operation ran from April 1 through September 30 and marked the fourth consecutive year the initiative has been conducted across the country. Nationwide results from the six-month surge included 118 arrests, 41 federal charges, and the recovery of 72 weapons. Authorities also identified or located 25 child victims during the operation. Data from the Department of Justice indicated that arrests during this period increased by 123 percent, while the number of individuals federally charged rose by 52 percent compared to the previous year. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the operation was intended to demonstrate a commitment to supporting tribal partners. He described the effort as a message that communities in Indian Country would receive consistent federal attention and resources.
